Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amit Tai, Say, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee into Tarsus from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa, and he found a ship going to Tarsus. So he paid the fear the of and went down into it to go with them and to tarshish from the presence of the Lord. Now I'm going to circle around pay the fear thereof because Jonah was trying to get out of there. Now I'm going to open my Holmes Illustrated Bible dictionary just to read a little bit about Nineveh where Jonah did not want to go. I might be pronouncing some things wrong, but bear with me. We got Nineveh, or Nenui, greatest of the capitals of the ancient Assyrian Empire that flourished from about 800 to 612 BC, though its settlement was founded several millennia prior. It was located on the east Bank of the Tigris River in northeastern Mesopotamia. Its remains are distinguished by a rectangular perimeter wall that's approximately 2 kilometers wide and five kilometers long, and also two mounds, meaning many sheep and the prophet Jonah. Next, we have a simplified map of ancient Nineveh showing city walls, the kosher river, the city's 15 gates, and the two mounds. Let's go back to see what's going on with Jonah verse four. But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty Tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Then the Mariners were afraid and cried every man into his God, and cast forth the wars that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it of them. But Jonah was going down into the size of the ship, and he lay and was fast asleep. Now I'm gonna write here that because it reminded me of Jesus, how Jesus was asleep also on the boat with his disciples when the sea was just rocking and waving and going, you know, crazy and they had to wake him up. Now I'm going to search it up because I was kind of unsure of where I could find it and what reference I could use. So I'm going right in here to my iPad, going straight to Google. And I'm going to type in like, where is the scripture about Jesus being asleep on the boat with his disciples? And it should come up, I'm a person that likes to be sure of things. So if I don't know, I don't mind saying I don't know. I'm not going to act like I know just because I'm doing a Bible study with you guys. So these come up, it is actually in Matthew and Mark. If you don't know, some of the books in the Bible and New Testament are just different accounts of what happened from each person when Jesus was here. So that's why you have like a lot of different preferences that say the same thing in different books. So here it is. I finally have it and I'm looking at the scripture that is in Mark. So I'm gonna read it for you guys. It says and he was in the hinder hinder part of the ship asleep on the pillow and they awake him and saying to him, Master, care us thou not that we perish. So this kind of reminds us of the moment with Jonah, how they had to go with Jonah up like Jonah, what's going on? You got to be the cause of this. Let's keep reading. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper, arise call upon thy God, if so be that God would think upon us that we perish not. And they said everyone to his fellow, Come, and let us cast slots, that we may know for whose cause is evil is upon us. So they cast slots and the lot fell upon Jonah. Now you can go down and read in the notes what lot mean, but since this doesn't have I'm going to open back up my Homan Illustrated Bible Dictionary. Lots objects of unknown shape and material used to determine the divine will. Often in the ancient Near East, people, especially priests, made difficult and significant decisions by casting lights on the ground or drawing them from a receptacle. Several times Scripture mentions the practice. We do not know exactly what the lots look like nor do we know how they were interpreted. We do know that people of the Old Testament and New Testament believed God or gods in the case of non Israelites or non Christians influenced the fall or outcome of the lots. You can check it in Proverbs chapter 16 verse 33. Thus, casting lights was a way of determining God's will. One of the best examples of this use of lot is an axe. Mattheus was chosen to be Judas's successor by lot. Acts One and 26. The Apostles prayer immediately before shows the. Believe that God would express His will through His method. In the Old Testament, Saul was chosen as Israel's first king through the use of lots. For the sake of time, I'm not going to read all of it, but you can screenshot it if you want to continue reading about what lots were and what were their purpose that we may know. For whose cause is evil is upon us. So they cast slots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. Someone come to the front then, said they, and to him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause is evil is upon us. What is thine occupation? And whence comest thou? What is thy country, and of what people art thou? And he said unto them, I am in Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea in the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast I done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because they had told them. Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? For the sea wroth, and it was temperate. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea. So shall the sea be calm unto you, For I know that for my sake this great temperate is upon you. Nevertheless the men rolled hard to bring it to the land, but they could not, for the sea wroth and was temperate against them. Wherefore they cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood. For thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows. Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and three nights. Look how God just created disciples for him in this very moment. Going down to the notes, it says the great fish that swallowed Jonah was not necessarily a whale. Yarns of a sailor surviving Jonah like in a whale, had been widely reported in recent centuries, but no account has ever been authenticated. 3 days and three nights parallels Christ's resurrection on the third day. Matthew 12 and 40, here we can see another reference to Jesus within three days. So I just amazing when you read the Bible how you can put different connections together and you could just learn so much. So here I'm just marking where Matthew in 12 and 40 shows the reference. So you can check that out anytime. OK, so now we're nearing the end and I just wanted to show you guys when you have this screen in your Bible, just place it where you stop at and it'll hold your spot. But I'm going to move my back to Matthew because I'm in Matthew now and challenge myself to read the Bible. And slowly but surely I'm I'm getting there. As you can see, my notes are already in my Bible. So we're going to put that up and I'm going to go and show you what the Wilmington's Bible Handbook has in it. This particular book just sums up what you read in each book or chapter. So it starts off in chapter one and says God says go. The prophet says no. The Lord called Jonah to preach to Nineveh, capital of Assyria. Jonah, however, got up and went into the opposite direction in order to get away from the Lord. He boarded a ship heading to Tarsus, probably a seaport in Spain. God had commanded Jonah to go 600 miles to the east. He fled more than 1200 miles to the West. Verses 4 through 17 A storm at sea, and he is its cause and cure. Soon after Jonah's ship set sail, God sent a great storm that threatened to wreck it. After the sailors had called in vain on their God's lowercase gene, they implored Jonah to call on his God, whom he had told them about. Then, by casting lights, they determined that Jonah's fleeing from his guide had caused the storm. The storm stopped at once and Jonah was swallowed by a great fish. Through the failure of their own gods and the faithful witnesses of Jonah, the Pagan sellers came to believe in the God of Israel. That was such a beautiful part, how they just said, look, our God was not doing a thing. So we have to believe in the God that you serve, because we have witnessed with our own eyes what God can do and how powerful and great he is, so we shall serve him too. Jonah's calm amid the storm and his willingness to accept responsibility for the situation were probably scrung testimonies as well. Jonah knew that at worst, his being thrown into the sea would deliver these innocent men from God's wrath and at best God would miraculously deliver him.
